Hatton Gallery reopens with exciting exhibition plans for 2021

Newcastle University’s Hatton Gallery reopens for the first time in 15 months on Saturday 5 June with an exciting 2021 programme, including a blockbuster autumn exhibition of Pop artists like Andy Warhol.  

The reopening exhibition in June will celebrate the work of Newcastle University’s BA Fine Art students, who have completed much of the last year of their degree remotely due to COVID 19. The emerging artists will display their varied work across the entire gallery, and Newcastle University’s Fine Art department, from 5-19 June. 

Three years after it was first displayed among the ancient ruins of Herculaneum and Pompeii in Italy, Catrin Huber’s Expanded Interiors is being transformed into a new multimedia exhibition at the Hatton. Expanded Interiors Re-Staged, which explores how artworks interact with their surroundings, will be on show from 3 July–10 August.  

The exhibition’s original art installations focused on two Roman houses: the House of the Beautiful Courtyard at Herculaneum and the House of the Cryptoporticus in Pompeii. These houses formed the basis to explore connections between contemporary art, Roman wall painting and archaeological remains. 

For this new exhibition, Huber will re-stage her striking geometric artworks in a fresh way that explores their connection with the architecture of the Hatton Gallery. She will also introduce new physical and digital artworks, including an incredible real-time 3D environment that will enable visitors to virtually ‘walk around’ ancient houses in Herculaneum and Pompeii. The exhibition will also include a brand-new commission by fellow Newcastle-based artist, Rosie Morris. 

After the success of the ARTIST ROOMS Roy Lichtenstein exhibition in 2019/20, the Gallery will see more Pop Art legends brought to the region with its Print Goes Pop exhibition this autumn. 

Print Goes Pop, 25 September 2021–22 January 2022, will be a colourful exploration of the way artists have used the screenprinting method in their work, particularly during the 1960s when many ‘pop’ artists embraced the technique to make vibrant large-scale prints embracing imagery from popular culture. Artists on display will include Richard Hamilton, Roy Lichtenstein, Victor Pasmore, Bridget Riley, Parviz Tanavoli and Andy Warhol.   

The exhibition combines loans from the Arts Council Collection, Tate and the V&A with rarely seen works from the Hatton and Laing collections, such as Eduardo Paolozzi’s Bunk! series. Key loans include several examples from Warhol’s iconic ‘Marilyn’ series.    

All of Hatton Gallery’s exhibitions are free entry, with a suggested donation of £5.

Whilst social distancing is still in place visitors must book online tickets in advance, and comply with government guidance on face mask wearing, social distancing and participating in the Test and Trace system.    

Fewer people will be admitted to the venue, and some spaces may be closed where it is difficult to implement social distancing but staff will be on hand to guide visitors and answer questions. Please check the latest guidelines and plan your visit before travelling.
