About
The exhibition aims to reflect on the evolving landscape of contemporary painting by highlighting diverse methodologies serving as a platform to offer a fresh interpretation of 21st-century painting. At the core of the show is an exploration of the ‘expanded field’ of painting, which challenges some of its conventional definitions and limitations. Artists challenge the way how painting can transcend the traditional flat canvas and easel, integrating various materials and techniques that blur the boundaries between painting and other art forms. The exhibition examines the connections between 20th and 21st centuries painting traditions by showcasing how contemporary artists in the Fine Art Department engage with historical practices, but also prompts a critical evaluation of pedagogical approaches at the Fine Art 100 anniversary at Newcastle University.
