Collaborative duo Harriet Sutcliffe and Jack Mutton are based between Newcastle and London, and work across the disciplines of fine art and architecture. Sutcliffe’s work in particular has been informed by archival material pertaining to the experimental exhibition practice of Richard Hamilton, in 2013 creating An Exhibit III which aimed to recreate the physical experience of structures now only known through two-dimensional archival material.

Sutcliffe & Mutton’s design for the Showcase pavilion combines their sculptural and architectural approaches to create an immersive environment – capable of adjusting to a number of different scenarios – within which they will offer a new way of viewing the collection as a whole rather than focusing on the singularity of each work.

Their design for the pavilion references a cross-section of both well-known and more overlooked works in the Hatton collection, including pieces by John Kinnaird, Camillo Procacinni, and Richard Hamilton, which will be shown alongside their drawings and models in the exhibition at the Laing Art Gallery.

Sutcliffe is currently undertaking a practice-led PhD at Newcastle University. Mutton is an architectural designer and maker working in London, and studying at the University of Cambridge.
